Survey to Assist Parent Council in Deciding Whether to Endorse School Funding Proposal

Since January, the SEHS Parent Council has been getting information about the cuts in the District 4J budget. In light of the deep cuts in next year's budget for the 4J District and at South Eugene High School, the Parent Council is considering endorsing Measure 20-182 ("School Funding Measure"), the city income tax proposal on the May ballot.

The cuts to the South Eugene High School program would include:

· the loss of 7 teachers in classic South, and additional losses in IHS

· class size increases by an average of 5 students.

· the loss of 35 class sections: every department will experience cuts that increase class size and thus reduce the number of sections for the classes that remain

· the loss of level 1 and 2 French and German classes (we will be phasing out these two languages, although not including French immersion)

· the loss of AP Psychology and Human Anatomy & Physiology

On April 6, 2011 the Parent Council met and discussed the School Funding Measure. The Parent Council is considering endorsing this measure. To include the wider school community's input, we are asking our membership to answer a short survey. If your student is currently enrolled at South Eugene High School, you are eligible to participate.

SEHS Parent Council

Minutes

Meeting on March 2, 2011

The minutes from the February 14, 2011 meeting were approved.

REPORTS

Treasurer: Kathy Barnes distributed a financial report and scrip report. Both are filed with the Recording Secretary's official minutes.

Principal: Recapped the month. Randy expressed sorrow about the deaths of two students, Jack Harnsongkram and Connor Ausland and talked about the impact on students and the community. He talked about district decisions regarding school closures and reductions. He mentioned the Drama Department's performance of "Into the Woods" and that the girls basketball team is still winning.

Randy updated us on the budget situation. The supply budget will be reduced 15% over last year (which was reduced 5%). Notices of anticipated layoffs were sent to 6 staff members. It is possible that he will have to give more letters. Randy's current projection is that SEHS will lose 7 FTE next year. He anticipates more letters will probably go out in early April to classified/administrators.

Site Council: The letter about communication (via email, web, basmati) approved by Parent Council went out to teachers and staff a few days ago.

Scrip: The new scrip coordinators are Lallie McKenzie for paper scrip and Vicki Silvers for eScrip.

OLD BUSINESS

Senior Party: Debbie Boures reported that she is co-chairing the Senior Party with Amy Trezona. She explained that this event is a great success and attracts a great cross section of students. Parents are encouraged to volunteer to make this event a success again this year. The party is June 11 at the University of Oregon Recreation Center. There will be a casino, prizes, a hypnotist, lazer tag and more.

Parent Council is asked to consider making the Senior Party a Parent Council sponsored event. More information will be presented at a future date about the financial situation of this event and the future leadership. Some concern was expressed that this responsibility should not fall to the Parent Council Chair and should not become a drain on the Parent Council budget.

Parent Program on Grief, Trauma: Randy reported on a program that was offered to the families involved with Mr. Axeman and others deeply impacted by the deaths of Jack and Conner with counselors, end others. There was an opportunity to share concerns and successes. There was discussion about trying to achieve balance and supporting eachother while trying to reach goals. 40-50 people attended.

For the wider community there was a decision that no program would be offered but a notice was published in eNews that a list of resources was available through the Counseling Office for those needing more support. The counselors and staff have been identifying students that might need more support and assistance.

Budget for 2011-2012: Treasurer Kathy Barnes presented the Budget and explained the details. The budget was approved. A copy is included in the Recording Secretary's official minutes.

NEW BUSINESS

Nominating Committee: The by-laws do not address certain aspects of the election and nomination process. Revisions will be recommended in April or May so the by-laws will reflect the reality of recruiting qualified candidates. So far Maggie Carlson will be the candidate to replace Maggie Moore as Recording Secretary for next year. Michelle Pellitier will be proposed as the candidate for Communications Secretary. The Committee needs more names for the Parent Council Chair/Co-Chair position and Site Council position.

The Directory and Program Committees would like to expand so there is continuity and training for future years. The Fall Open House Social Committee needs a chair.

City Tax: The City has proposed that a tax be levied to help schools next year. Joy Marshall spoke in favor of the tax. Rebecca Kovach introduced the question of whether South's Parent Council favors the tax.

Civic Stadium Property: Rebecca Kovach would like to form a study group to consider whether Parent Council can take a position to oppose the Fred Meyer proposal and endorse the YMCA's bid for purchasing and developing the Civic Stadium property.

Parent Council Positions Open for 2011-2012

The Parent Council Nominations Committee is taking applications for officers and committee chairs for next year. Everyone is invited to apply. The open jobs:

Chair/Co-Chair: Facilitates meetings once a month and general chair duties.
Site Council Representative: Attends once a month meetings and keeps Parent Council informed of decisions and issues.
Programs Chair/Co-Chair: Help plan and coordinate 2-4 programs per year.
Fall Open House Social: Coordinates social that occurs one hour before Open House in September. Great job if you only want one commitment.
Directory Committee: Another important volunteer job that is done in September. Both an important tool for communication and fundraiser for Parent Council. If you are comfortable using a computer and want to work from home, this is a great job for you.

Please submit a letter of interest to the Parent Council mailbox in the office or via email to hbeardswo@gmail.com. The letter should include your name, contact info, the grade your student is in this year and any relevant information, including why this would be a good job for you.

Michelle Pellitier- Communications Secretary

Michelle Pellitier

Michelle is a native Eugenean and graduated from SEHS. Her son, Peter graduated from SEHS last year and her daughter, Natalie, is a sophomore.

Michelle has edited the SEHS eNews since 2008 and was elected Communications Secretary, a Parent Council Steering Committee office, when the position was created in the revised by-laws in 2010. She plans to, in her words, “invade your mail box every Monday night until 2013.”

Kathy has had three students graduate from the South Eugene French Immersion program. Her youngest student is a Junior. I love volunteering at the high school and find teen-age energy exciting and entertaining.

She graduated from BYU in Finance. For the past 25 years she has been a stay-at-home mom. During that time, she has done a variety of things including teach piano and sing with the Eugene Symphony Chorus. Lately she has spendt a lot of time knitting things for her new grandson.

Kathy was elected as the PC Treasurer for this school year and will continue in that role in 2011-2012 if re-elected. Parent Council is so lucky to have such a great treasurer!

Remembrance: Connor Ausland and Jack Harnsongkram

The memorial service for Jack Harnsongkram is set for Sunday, February 27 at 1:00pm in the South Eugene High School auditorium. A reception follows in the school cafeteria.

In lieu of flowers, the families of Connor Ausland and Jack Harnsongkram request charitable donations.

The Ausland/Austin family set up the Connor Ausland Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Oregon Community Foundation at 440 E. Broadway, Suite #160, Eugene, OR 97401.

The checks can be made out to the foundation with Connor's name in the notes.

The Harnsongkram family requests donations be sent to Food for Lane County, ShelterCare or the Eugene Education Scholarship Fund for IOP.

February Meeting Info-- New Dates and Times

The Parent Council meeting and program scheduled for this Wednesday, Feb. 9 has been cancelled.

The business meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 14 at 10:00am. Go to the School Office for location.

The program “School Funding: Show Me the Money” has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Feb. 16 from 7:30-8:30 in the school cafeteria. (Please disregard the date on the green postcard that will arrive in your mailbox this week.) Find out how the School Board's sustainable budget will affect staffing and programs at South next year. Understand other funding options including a local income tax.

School Lottery Postponed to April This Spring

School Choice Season Postponed One Month

The Eugene School District's school choice season is coming up — and so are school board decisions about whether to close and consolidate several schools.

Because sustainable budget decisions in late January may involve changes in schools and attendance areas, the board has postponed the school choice application period and placement lottery for the 2011–12 school year by about a month.

The school choice application period will begin in early February instead of early January, and the deadline for school choice request forms to be considered in the annual school choice lottery will be in April rather than March. The revised school choice timeline applies to this year only.

WESTSIDE STORY GALA--FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2010!

On November 5th, Parent Council is sponsoring a "West Side Story Gala”. This classic will be performed by South's acclaimed Drama department. Tickets for this special evening includes a seat for the musical, a student featured art exhibit reception with sparkling drinks before the show, and the after show Gala Party. Visit ‘NYC’ and its exciting Westside and enjoy savory snacks and sweet desserts, have the opportunity to learn a Jerome Robbins’ style dance, meet the actors, as well as a chance to win wonderful prizes. Invitations will be mailed next week and tickets go on sale at the Parent Council meeting on October 6, 2010.

Since many families and community members traditionally attend the fall musical, this is an excellent opportunity to incorporate a fun and festive fundraiser into an evening of socializing, food, and entertainment. My husband and I are parents of three South Eugene French Immersion Graduates, all currently attending Brigham Young University. Our fourth child will be a Junior this year at South. I love volunteering at the high school and find teen-age energy exciting and entertaining.

I was born and raised in Utah, and graduated from BYU in Finance. After college, our little family lived in Washington, D.C. where my husband began his career and our middle two children were born. We moved to Oregon in 1991 to be closer to our western roots and have loved living in a beautiful place where there is so much to do as a family.

I have been a stay-at-home mom for the past 25 years. During that time, I taught piano lessons for 20 years, but now I fill my time volunteering at the schools, working in the women's organization for our church, singing with the Eugene Symphony Chorus, and spending every moment I can with our kids. Lately I've been spending a lot of time knitting things for our new grandson. What a great life!

Parent Council Co-Chairs Helen Beardsworth and Rebecca Kovach will be on hand at the Parent Social on September 22 at 6pm in the cafeteria to say hello and welcome you personally. Also there will be Principal Randy Bernstein, Volunteer Coordinator Kathy Ruggles and the entire Parent Council team. Shelley Singell is the parent volunteer organizing this fun event where we'll put the "puzzle together."

South Eugene High School

Parent Council By-Laws (draft 5/19/10)

ARTICLE I: NAME, DESCRIPTION & PURPOSE

Section 1: NAME- The name of the organization shall be South Eugene High School Parent Council (“Parent Council”). The Parent Council is located at South Eugene High School, 400 E.19th Avenue, Eugene, Oregon.

Section 2: PURPOSE – The South Eugene High School Parent Council keeps parents involved and informed and acts as a conduit between the parents, the South Site Council, and the school administrators. Traditionally we plan and organize school events including fundraising, social events and parent education. Parent Council’s purpose is to improve the environment at South Eugene High School through volunteer and financial support.

ARTICLE II: MEMBERSHIP

Membership shall be automatically granted to all parents or guardians of students at South Eugene High School and the principal of South Eugene High School. All Members have voting privileges except the principal. Staff and students may attend general meetings of the Parent Council but may not vote, unless they are also the parent or guardian of a student.

ARTICLE III: STEERING COMMITTEE

Section 1: STEERING COMMITTEE: The Steering Committee shall consist of the following officers: Chair, Recording Secretary, Communications Secretary and Treasurer. Officers’ positions may be shared. All Standing Committee chairs, including the two parent representatives to Site Council, are also members of the Steering Committee. The school Principal, or his/her designee, is a non-voting, ex facto member of the Steering Committee.

Section 2: TERM OF OFFICE – The term of office for all officers is one year, beginning July 1 and ending June 30 of the following year. Officers may serve for more than one term when the Council membership so approves. Officers positions may be shared, preferably staggered so that an experienced officer would be one of the candidates for the shared position each year.

Section 3: QUALIFICATIONS – Any Parent Council member in good standing may become an Officer of the Parent Council. The Parent Council member must be the parent or guardian of a student.

Section 4: DUTIES

Steering Committee: Develops the Parent Council’s annual budget, makes preliminary recommendations on policies or positions, establishes and oversees committees to conduct and manage the work of the Parent Council and establishes fundraising programs.

Chair - Convenes Parent Council meetings and will prepare agendas that include items agreed upon at previous meetings, standing reports, and additional items requested by Council members. The Chair must either post the agenda or make the agenda available to the Communications Secretary at least 24 hours before Parent Council meetings. Equal participation by Council members will be encouraged and facilitated. The Chair serves as the official representative of the Parent Council. Authority to sign contracts is limited to the Chair or the Chair’s designee.

Recording Secretary: The Recording Secretary will record minutes for all Steering Committee meetings and general Parent Council meetings and will hold historical records for the Parent Council, including agendas and minutes. The Recording Secretary will submit copies of the minutes to all Steering Committee members and make copies available online or in hard copy so all members of Parent Council will have access to a copy.

Communications Secretary: The Communications Secretary will manage communications for the Parent Council, including but not limited to the Parent Council eNews, email broadcasts, website, blogs, bulletin boards, etc. The Communications Secretary will post communications authorized by Parent Council. The Communications Secretary is also responsible for distributing the agenda according to the notice requirements below.
Treasurer: The Treasurer shall monitor Parent Council finances, prepare deposits and disbursements, reconcile bank accounts, compile monthly reports, oversee the budgetary process, and maintain all financial records in accordance with Parent Council and Eugene School district 4J policies. The Treasurer serves as chair for any Budget Committee meetings.

Section 5: STEERING COMMITTEE MEETINGS – The Steering Committee shall meet monthly during the school year or at the discretion of a majority of the Steering Committee. A separate Steering Committee meeting is not necessary in months when a regular Parent Council meeting is held. A majority of the members of the Steering Committee must be present to constitute a quorum when their meeting is not held during a Parent Council meeting.

ARTICLE IV: APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS AND REPRESENTATIVES

Section 1: NOMINATIONS - In the spring of each year, the Parent Council will notify members of the election for the next school year and open nominations. The Steering Committee will propose a slate of nominees for all Officers Notice of the Election and slate must be given at least 2 weeks before the election takes place and must be provided to the membership through eNews and any other means likely to notify the membership of the slate, the candidates, the voting method and date.

Section 2: ELECTIONS – The nominees for officers will be presented to the membership for approval no later than the May meeting. All members of the Parent Council may vote. The Officers will be elected by a majority vote of the Parent Council members either present at the May meeting or submitting written or online ballots, whichever method of voting is selected by the Steering Committee. At any time, the Steering Committee may appoint a member of the Parent Council to any position not filled by the spring election or any position vacated prematurely by an officer.

Section 3: REMOVAL: An Officer can be removed from office for failure to fulfill his/her duties, after reasonable notice, by a majority vote of the Parent Council members either present at a regular Parent Council meeting or submitting written or online ballots, whichever method of voting is selected by the Steering Committee.

ARTICLE V: OTHER COMMITTEES

Section 1: STANDING COMMITTEES - There are three standing committees:

PARENT EDUCATION COMMITTEE: This committee plans and organizes a parent education series at South Eugene High School. The chair of this committee shall be nominated by the Steering Committee and approved or removed by a Parent Council Vote.

FUNDRAISING/SCRIP COMMITTEE: This committee oversees all parent council fundraising activities including all scrip sales. Its members have a duty to communicate regularly with the Treasurer of Parent Council. The chair of this committee shall be nominated by the Steering Committee and approved or removed by a Parent Council Vote.

SITE COUNCIL PARENT REPRESENTATIVES COMMITTEE: This committee consists of two representatives and one alternative representative. They shall be selected from Parent Council members and shall be nominated and elected in the same manner as the officers. At any time the Steering Committee may appoint a Parent Council member to fill any position on the committee not filled by the spring elections or vacated prematurely by a Site Council Representative. Site Council Representatives shall serve no more than two years without being re-elected, except they may serve an additional year if their first year was as an alternative representative. Site Council Representatives have a duty to represent the views of and act on the behalf of the Parent Council members at large. Site Council Representatives are subject to removal in the same manner as officers in Article IV above.

Section 2: AD HOC COMMITTEES – Additional committees and task forces will be established as needed to do the work of the Parent Council. The Steering Committee will appoint a Chair who will present reports or updates to the Steering Committee and the Parent Council. Any Ad Hoc committee may include interested parents, students and community members.

Section 4: DUTIES – Each committee will regularly report to Parent Council and will maintain archives of the committee and give them to the Recording Secretary at the end of each year.

ARTICLE VI: MEETINGS

Section 1: MEETINGS –Parent Council meetings shall be held to conduct the business of the Parent Council. Meetings shall be held monthly during the school year or at the discretion of the Steering Committee.

Section 2: VOTING - Each member in attendance at a Parent Council meeting is eligible to vote. In some instances, the Steering Committee may authorize a vote by mail or online in which case all Members of Parent Council are eligible to vote.

Section 3: NOTICE: The Communications Secretary must disseminate the agenda for Parent Council Meeting 24 hours before any vote may be taken. Notice may be disseminated via email, by posting the agenda at South near the main office, or by distributing written copies of the agenda. .

Section 4: QUORUM – A quorum is necessary to approve the budget, elect officers and vote on any significant parent council matter, including By-Laws amendments. Ten members of Parent Council shall constitute a quorum of Parent Council.

Section 5: DECISION-MAKING – A majority vote of Parent Council members present is required for a decision.

ARTICLE VII: FINANCIAL POLICIES

Section 1: FISCAL YEAR- The fiscal year of the Parent Council begins July 1 and ends June 30 of the following year.

Section 2: BANKING- Parent Council funds shall be maintained in appropriate financial accounts approved by the Steering Committee. Parent council shall use the Eugene School District 4J Federal Tax I.D. for all such accounts. Authorized signers on all accounts shall include the Parent Council Chair, the Principal, Eugene School District 4J Finance Officer and at least two other members of the Steering Committee and/or SEHS administration. Other authorized signers may be added as needed with the approval of the Steering Committee. The Treasurer shall not be a signer on any Parent Council account.

Section 3: REPORTS AND RECORDKEEPING – The Treasurer shall be responsible for reconciling bank accounts on a monthly basis, as well as preparing monthly Parent Council Financial Reports and Eugene School District 4J reports. A financial update shall be presented by the Treasurer at all regular Parent Council meetings. Parent Council financial records shall be audited in accordance with the Eugene School District 4J’s auditing schedule. Historical Parent Council financial records shall be maintained by the Treasurer for a period of five years.

Section 4: RESERVES – Parent Council shall maintain appropriate reserve funds in excess of budgeted expenditures. Reserve fund amounts shall be set by the Treasurer with the approval of the Steering Committee.

Section 5: BUDGET – The Treasurer shall oversee the annual budgetary process, as well as monitor compliance with the budget on an ongoing basis. Parent Council funds raised in any given fiscal year shall be the basis for expenditures for the following fiscal year. In the spring of each year, a proposed budget for the following fiscal year shall be presented at a regular Parent Council meeting for approval by the general membership present at the meeting.

ARTICLE VIII: BYLAWS AMENDMENTS

Any Parent Council member may propose amendments to the bylaws. Amendments presented at a Parent Council meeting shall be considered for voting at a subsequent meeting. Two-thirds (2/3) approval of all members present and voting is required to adopt an amendment to the bylaws.

ARTICLE IX: DISSOLUTION
In the event of dissolution of the Parent Council, any funds remaining shall be donated to South Eugene High School.

ARTICLE X: PARLIAMENTARY AUTHORITY
The authority for this organization shall be Robert’s Rules of Order.

South Athletic Fields Issue

Parent Feedback Wanted! The SEHS Parent Council is in the process of creating a letter to the 4j Board regarding the sale of the Civic Stadium property and its impact on the South school community. Several issues are being discussed such as impact on our neighborhood in terms of development, loss of athletic practice fields and compensation for upgrades and prioritization of recreation goals in the sale of the property. Cindy Wright – Parent Council Treasurer

Cindy Wright has served as Parent Council Treasurer for the past four years. Being treasurer of parent groups seems to be her niche, since she also served as treasurer at Spencer Butte Middle School for two years and at Edgewood/Evergreen for five years. She also volunteers in the Career Center, where she helps to coordinate the Sophomore Project.

Julia, Cindy’s oldest daughter, graduated from SEHS in 2009 and is now attending the University of Oregon as a history major. Her younger daughter, Serena, is currently a sophomore at South, and dreams of studying drama as far away from Eugene as possible.

Cindy graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Business Administration, and currently works part-time at Berg’s Ski & Snowboard Shop, handling various administrative duties. Her husband, Steve, is an architect and former UO graduate.

When not working or volunteering, Cindy can usually be found in her yard, trying (unsuccessfully for the most part) to stay one step ahead of the deer, or working on various other projects around the house. She also enjoys reading, as well as traveling and exploring new places and cultures with her family.

Jennifer Wyld has two daughters who attend South. She is a Montessori Middle School educator and has two Masters degrees- in Geography (focusing on environmental education) and Education. she lives out her life-long love of learning, by literally never having left school. That is one reasons it was natural for her to volunteer to help organize the Parent Education series for Parent Council.

In her spare time, when she has it, she can be found reading, knitting or running.

On March 31 Randy will be updating us on staffing, funding and the "state of the union" at South. This program, from 7-8:30, will be combined with a meeting to vote on the PC budget and other organizational issues, including ideas for future education programs.

A Eugene native, I graduated from SEHS in 1977 and went on to graduate from the University of Oregon with a degree in Interior Architecture. In 1988 I married John Pellitier, Landscape Architect. We have practiced Interior Design and Landscape Architecture in Eugene as Pellitier & Pellitier since that time. We recently moved our office and staff to our home but have not retired………….

Our son Peter will graduate from SEHS this year. Our daughter, Natalie, is a freshman.

I have “edited” the eNEWS for SEHS since the fall of 2008. I chose this volunteer position because I appreciated the eNEWS so much starting as an 8th grade parent.

It is my current intention and hope to invade your mail box every Monday night until Spring of 2013.

If you would like to see something additional in eNEWS please email me your ideas or articles for publication. I’d like to represent everything happening at SEHS however I can only publish what I receive: I encourage you to send me your articles or ideas.

At the Parent Council meeting on Wednesday, March 31 at 7pm, I will be working with folks interested in helping draft editorial guidelines for eNews and this blog. If you’re interested, come to the meeting. I’d love to say hello.

I am the new Parent Council Chair.

Volunteering at South: I have been coordinating the scrip program for South this year. I volunteered in the Career Center for a few years and worked on the Senior Party. I started South’s Mock Trial Team and coached it for the first two years. This year Stan Paulic and Dennis Gurl coached and rumor has it the team won their region yesterday and will be going to State in a few weeks. Congratulate any student you know on the team including Olivia Seulement-Provol and Rio O’Mary.

Family: My son, Michael, graduated from South last June and is attending the Clark Honors College at UO. My daughter, Kathleen, is a dancing maniac Junior in South’s Classic program. My husband, David, is an anesthesiologist with Northwest Anesthesia Physicians.

Miscellaneous: I was one of 7 children, attended college at University of California, Irvine (anteaters) and graduated from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. I’m currently a volunteer mediator for Small Claims Court in Lane County and a volunteer in UO Conflict Resolution Services.

When I’m not working and volunteering: I like to go to the movies and am looking forward to watching the Oscars next Sunday.

South parents, guardians and interested community members should attend the next Parent Council meeting scheduled for 7:00pm on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 in the South cafeteria.

Topics for the March 31, 2010 meeting include proposed by-laws and rules, and approval of the Parent Council budget for 2010-2011. Until by-laws are adopted, we are operating under the Mission/Group Agreements revised in May 2004 (see below).

Every member of our community is encouraged to attend and give input. When by-laws are adopted, I encourage you to volunteer to be a representative for your student’s grade and participate in our once a month, one hour meetings.

Should South Adopt a New Grading Model?

Traditionally, final course grades largely depend on how many mistakes a student made on specific tests days and scores students from other assignments. In an alternative grading model some parents and students are discussing, performances on tests and assignments would strictly serve a diagnostic function that would help students and teachers determine which concepts the student had successfully developed—but, most importantly, the errors your student makes wouldn’t penalize his or her final course grade. Students could then study further and confirm the concepts they had newly mastered via subsequent evaluations. Proponents believe this new grading model would greatly relieve counter-productive stress and pressure that de-motivates students, and would help students love learning far more than before.

Your student’s final grade would depend entirely on the breadth of concepts acquired and demonstrated by the end of the semester, and all mistakes he or she made before mastering each new concept would be entirely ignored. Does the traditional grading model or an alternative like the one under discussion induce more stress, and does such stress help or hinder cognitive development and a student’s passion for lifelong learning? Many students at South have expressed a broad range of emotions about their classes and life at South, from excitement to outrage to everything else in between. Typically, parents can’t offer much more than a few words of compassion or perspective, or an occasional tidbit of wisdom. The community of parents at South share a collective intelligence about what’s working well and what’s not, yet these parental insights often don’t affect much beyond dinner table and coffee house conversations.

That could soon change. On Sep 30th Parent Council met and started visualizing an entirely new direction. South's Wonderful Extracurricular Opportunities

Whether you and your student are new to South or returning for another year, you may be wondering how to help your teen get involved and engaged in such a large high school. Parent Council's first Parent Education Series of the new academic year will feature Freshman Counselor Travis Johnson and a number of South students as they provide details about extracurricular activities, clubs and sports opportunities available to students. Travis will offer you an overview of South's current clubs and organizations and will share how students benefit from participating in these extracurricular experiences. This worthwhile program will be held Wednesday, September 30th from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the South cafeteria, and students are invited to attend as well. The Education Series will continue on the last Wednesday of each month through May, except November and December. Suicide Prevention: A conversation focused on saving our teenager's lives

Parents, we invite you to join us for a Parent Education Series event that is aimed at saving lives and protecting our teenagers from dangerous behaviors. Especially in light of recent tragedies involving suicide at South and other area high schools, our February 25th Parent Education Session will focus on how we, as parents and educators, can work together to prevent suicide. A rich panel of educators and therapists, drawn from our very own South Eugene High School Care Team, will be on hand to present information and lead discussion on the following topics:

* What are the indicators that a teenager may be at risk of attempting suicide?
* What resources are available to teenage peers, parents, or school staff if they are concerned about one of our teens?
* What prevention strategies exist for parents and others to use?
* What curriculum and programs are available in school to help prevent such tragedies?

Have you heard that your child, whether as a South Classic or International High School student needs to complete a certain level of community service? Not sure what is required or where to begin?

Join Ellen Brunson-Newton, representing Classic South and Courtney Leonard, International High School, and a variety of South students who have done community service for Parent Council's December Parent Education Series. They will give you information on how to approach the 100 hours needed for IHS , what it takes for a 4j Honors Diploma, Honor Society membership and what's required for the Classic Senior Project.

Think you've figured teenage boys out and believe that they spend way too much time blowing things up on video games and don't have a sensitive side? Well, after attending South's Parent Council October Parent Education Series led by 4j's Brandt Stuart, M.A.,M.S., Mental Health Specialist from SEHS' Health Center and South Eugene counselor Tibor Besskó we're hoping you'll know much, much more. Brandt is known for his expertise with young people, in particular boys, and he has co-lead South's weekly Young Men's support group for the last four years with Tibor, whose Master's thesis dealt with masculine identity formation among teenage boys.

We invite parents of teenage boys (and girls!) to participate in a discussion on what is unique to being a teenage boy as we address issues such as sensitivity, parenting boys when they present challenging behaviors, cultural messages about boys- what's helpful/what's not and that there are endless ways to be a boy in our complex world.

We'll meet in the South Eugene High School cafeteria on Wednesday, October 29th from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. after the monthly Parent Council meeting from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. Students are welcome, too.

Getting Involved at South: Secrets Revealed

Whether you and your student are new to South or returning for another year, you may be wondering how to help your teen approach a school South Eugene's size to get involved. Parent Council’s first Parent Education Series of the new academic year (on Wednesday, September 24th from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the South cafeteria) will feature Assistant Principal, Stephanie Cannon, and a number of South students as they provide you details on the extracurricular activities, clubs and sports opportunities available to your students.

Stephanie will provide you with an overview of South's current clubs and organizations and will share how students can even start a new club of their own. Students are invited to attend, as well.

White Privilege: Now that we know, where do we go from here?

You may be familiar with the term “White Privilege” and have had an opportunity to learn what it is and how it affects members of our community. Or, perhaps you have not heard of this concept and depending on where you are coming from may even take offense at the term itself. White privilege has been described as “a sociological concept describing advantages enjoyed by white persons beyond what is commonly experienced by the non-white people in those same social spaces (nation, community, workplace, etc.). It differs from racism or prejudice by the fact that a person benefiting from white privilege need not hold racist beliefs themselves.”

Consistent with our school's focus on multi-cultural appreciation and following up on the rich and meaningful conversations begun at our April 2nd Parent Education Series, a panel of speakers will continue our conversations on various aspects of cultural competence, including white privilege.

South Eugene High School staff spent much of their professional development time last year and this year, exploring and developing their individual and collective sense of cultural competence and attitudes about racism. They know that the more they learn and grow in this way, the better able they are to serve an increasingly diverse community of learners. Some of the lessons are difficult to come to terms with, but every one is critically important.

These issues are not only relevant to the confines of the school; rather, it's absolutely critical that we include parents in this conversation. It takes courage to participate in this dialogue, and we hope that if you attended in April you will return and if you were unable to make it that you'll join us in May.

We invite all South parents and their students to participate as we continue this meaningful conversation on the concept of “White Privilege” with a panel of highly esteemed members of the various communities of color from Eugene and Springfield. We'll talk about how this applies to South Eugene families and decide what our next steps are to continue awareness among our fellow parents and students on this reality. Based on what occurred during our initial evening discussing this, you'll surely find it to be a most thought provoking evening! Please join us on May 8th.

Teens at Work: Interviews, Resumes and Finding Part Time Jobs

Want to know how to help your teen find a part time job now or for this summer? If so, please join our March Parent Education Series on Thursday, March 6, 2008 from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the South Eugene High School Cafeteria.

Jocelyn LaMar, South’s School to Work Coordinator, will provide information on labor laws related to teens between 14-17 and will share strategies that will be helpful to teens and parents when looking for a part time or summer job. Lori Kramer, Career and Employment Services, Lane Community College, will be with us to provide parents and students with tips on how to build a resume and prepare for a part time job interview.

Beyond Romeo and Juliet: A Parent’s Discussion on Responding to Teen Dating and Relationships

Chances are you that you remember your first high school crush. But somehow it seems somewhat intimidating and scary to see your own child going through the paces of meeting that special someone (most likely through South Eugene’s network on Facebook). Or, perhaps they aren’t dating like we did in high school and you are wondering about that. Let’s talk parent to parent to share how we are navigating the waters of how to react, how to not overreact and how to support our children through this wonderful, but emotion-filled stage of their high school lives. Some current South Eugene High School students and a local expert on teen relationships will join the discussion, as well. Your students are always welcome to attend our Parent Education Series and are certainly welcome at this one, as well.

Preparing your Teen for the World of Credit

Credit Abuse Resistance Education ("CARE") is an organization that presents free information about the use and abuse of credit cards. Parent Council has invited them to be the presenter at our January Parent Education Series on Wednesday, January 9, 2008. The presentation will be in the SEHS cafeteria from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. Following the holidays, Parent Council thought it would be a good idea to talk about how to use credit wisely. The CARE program is designed to teach teens (and reaffirm good habits for parents) about how to build and maintain good credit as young consumers. Our speakers will be Judge Charles Carlson with the Lane County Circuit Court and P. Rebecca Kamitsuka, U.S. Department of Justice Attorney for the United States Bankruptcy Trustee.

"Let's Get Real About Drugs and Alcohol Use at South"

The South Eugene High School Parent Council has recently become aware of some alarming events at South regarding drugs and alcohol. While our most recent student survey data of last year’s 11th graders indicates that it is still the reported minority who are using illegal substances on a regular basis, it is a significantly large minority. Furthermore, we are concerned about students being approached on or near campus by South students selling drugs and seeing them openly smoking marijuana. We are hearing of many students receiving MIP (Minors in Possession), including a number of fall athletes who signed statements saying they understood the consequences of using while being on a team.

We've polled the 75 parents on the Parent Council and the response has been overwhelmingly in support of a program right before our teens go on vacation this December to talk about this openly and strongly. The Parent Council is putting together a panel of speakers which will include professionals associated with rehab programs, physicians, parents, current students and other experts who can comment on the affects this is having on our students.

Please make this Parent Education Series a priority to attend on Thursday, December 13th from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the South Eugene High School cafeteria. We know this falls during the busy holiday season, but this one-hour could make a huge difference for your student, who could be among those who are not using or those who are.

Suicide Prevention: Take Action to Make A Difference!

Did you know that two Churchill High School families have lost a child to suicide in the last 3 months?

Would you know what to do if a friend of your teen was suicidal or if you even were concerned about your own child?

Each year an estimated 775,000 family members are impacted by the suicide attempt or death of a loved one. Countless others are concerned about friends. You can make a difference and possibly save a life. In as little as one hour parents and their teens attending South Eugene Parent Council's November 8th Parent Education Series can learn to recognize the warning signs of suicide and how to apply three simple steps that may save a life.

Presented by a certified instructor, Damien Sands, each QPR training includes information on: the problem of suicide nationally and in Lane County, common myths and facts associated with suicide, warning signs of suicide, tips for asking the suicide question, methods for persuading suicidal individuals to get help, ways of referring at risk people to local resources, and time for questions and answers.

Each attendee will receive a QPR booklet and card with information on suicide prevention, as well as resource information for treatment providers and support groups within their community.

We know this isn't a pretty topic and that your teen may even not want you to attend. But the QPR you learn and may some day even have to apply could save a life of a precious Eugene teen. Please join us on Thursday, November 8th from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the South Eugene Cafeteria.

Top Ten Most Important Things to Know About Applying to College

Trying to sort out everything you need to know to prepare your students for the college application process either now or in the next 1-5 years ahead? Aware that South has an awesome Career Center, but you're not really sure how to have your student maximize their time there? Join us for the Parent Education Series on Tuesday, October 9 from 7:30 to 8:30 pm in the SEHS Cafeteria, following the Parent Council business meeting from 6:45 to 7:30 pm.

The program will begin with a review of the "Top Ten Most Important Things to Know about Applying to College". Then Virginia Farkas, co-director of SEHS's Career Center, will provide an overview of all of the services available in the Career Center and on-line for you and your students to use to support their college search. As a special bonus, Virginia will open the Career Center after the meeting from 8:30 to 9:30 pm to allow parents and students to visit on that
same night.

Did you know that one of the #1 documented predictors for students succeeding in college has to do with what classes that have taken in grades 9th through 12th? What do our kids really need to know to prepare for college?

Come to our March Parent Education Series on Tuesday, March 6th in the SEHS Cafeteria from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. to hear from a national expert on college preparedness: University of Oregon’s David Conley. David will be joined by Ellen Brunson-Newton, SEHS Career Center director as they talk about the habits our college-bound kids need to develop before they leave high school and what we as parents can do now to prepare them.

David is an associate professor of educational policy and leadership and the founding director of the UO’s Center for Educational Policy Research. He wrote College Knowledge (Jossey-Bass, 2005) as a primer on what it really takes for students to achieve academic success after high school and how they can prepare for a successful college experience. “This book is not a test prep for the SAT,” he adds. “But it lines up with the knowledge and skills you need to do well on any college admissions test and in any freshman college course. It’s a down-to-earth, practical reality check for kids in high school.”

Teen Time Management Skills

Are you racing around trying to fit in a million things into your day, and helping your kids do the same thing? We all have the same 24 hour period of time, so come to learn how to manage yourself within that finite amount of time and sanely accomplish the most important items on your to-do list. Then share your new tools with your kids. We've timed this Parent Education Series to be available right after fall semester grades come out, to either provide your students will skills to improve their grades or to assist with keeping up the good work. Both parents and students are invited to attend. Our presenter will be Liz Coleman, SEHS parent, who manages the Lane Community College Tutoring Center and teaches Lane College Success classes, as well. Parents and students are welcome to attend Thursday, February 8th, 7:00 -8:30 p.m. in the South Eugene HS Cafeteria. Feel free to come early and support the Southside Java and Juice Bar, as well.

Parent Council hosted our 3rd Parent Education Series on Tuesday, December 5th for a conversation on "Curfews and Parties: What we need to know and how we can support each other and our high schoolers in managing the teenage social scene." We were joined by Ilisa Rooke-Ley, a defense attorney and parent of three students at South and Laurene Larson, South Eugene counselor, who discussed what the laws are regarding curfews and lead us through this important discussion. We met in the South Eugene High School cafeteria from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Parents attended the Parent Council meeting in the cafeteria from 7:00 -7:30. Parents were able to purchase refreshments from SEHS's very own Juice and Java Bar and Scrip and Chinook Books,as well. For more information, please e-mail Helen B. Two caring and dedicated South Eugene High School parents gave over fifty parents and students the gift of a panel of experts on eating disorders and body image at Parent Council's second Parent Education Series on November 1st. Dr. Pilar Bradshaw, a SEHS alumna, presented information on the signs and symptoms of an eating disorder and gave incredibly helpful information on what to do if you suspect that your student or someone in your life might have an eating disorder. We also heard from Jeff Hess, SEHS cross country and track coach and his important advice on speaking up when you believe that someone has an eating disorder.

South Eugene's Health Clinic staff have valuable information for parents and students on what to do if you think that someone you love may have an eating disorder. We also encourage you to bring this to the attention of the SEHS Counselors, coaches or any staff member.

Thank you to the parents who cared enough to attend to learn and listen and to our panel of experts. It was a most meaningful evening!

Whoa! This Internet Safety Information is really important!

South Eugene High School, Spencer Butte Middle School and Roosevelt Middle School parents had an eye opener at SEHS Parent Council's debut Parent Education Series on Teen Internet Safety.

A huge thank you goes out to our presenter for the evening, Deputy Sheriff Steve Sieczkowski, from the Lane County Sheriff's Office, who volunteers his time to teach Internet and Your Child safety classes. He provided parents will chilling information on just how easy it is for a person with mal intent to track down the location of a child from a chat room by looking up their e-mail and tracing this to a phone number and then to their address. Yikes!

We barely scratched the surface of this important topic so we encourage you to consider taking the full day, $15.00 course offered by Steve and his fellow volunteers through Lane Community College's Continuing Education Program. To find out more, contact Lane at (541) 463-5252.

Officer Steve Sieckowski from the Lane County Sheriff's Department, an expert on this topic, will be here to present to all South parents:

Steve and his colleagues from the Sheriff's department have received very positive feedback from other parents who have heard him speak on this topic and we hope you can attend.

SEHS Parent Council's Family Connections Dessert was a hit!

We had a great mixture of new and returning families who came and met each other and interacted with Parent Council members.

Thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed conversations and desserts with Parent Council at our "1st Family Connections Dessert" event this past week.

After we had our fill of sugar and coffee we enjoyed an interesting and brief (Helen's favorite kind) Parent Council meeting.

The most surprising realization made by both new and returning families was that they did not realize that Parent Council was not an organization that you had to join. It simply is a forum for parents to connect and to learn more about raising our kids and you can come and go, as you please, no obligations necessary!

We'd love to have you stay for the one hour first Parent Council meeting of the year after the dessert from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the cafeteria, as well.
